How UME made a difference
By assembling a team with both specialist healthcare capabilities and experience of delivering PFI projects
of this size and scope, we were able to support the Northgate and Prudhoe Trust team with a very ‘hands on’,
user orientated approach. Early in the process, members of our team worked alongside the Trust at the
Disabilities North Exhibition and a variety of local stakeholder and residents groups. Close dialogue with
the Trust and the individual user was an important factor in a successful design solution.
Although the accommodation contains both secure rooms and others with extensive disability support features,
the domestic feel for the facility is maintained. This centre will become home for many people and we have
taken great care in designing it as a non institutional facility. Considerable care has been given to
landscaping, the use of natural building materials, e.g. cedar board cladding and the integration of art
to support the patients, staff and visitors.
